State of TV In S.A - We Need Something Different

South Africa has come a long way in terms of the quality of programming they write, produce and essentially film lately. From Intersexions and Four Play to Society and Sokhulu & Partners. Even our soapy game is on the up and up. But there’s still something wrong with this picture, all our best programs have no real concepts. They’re all based on the successes and struggles of our current society. There’s nothing wrong with that, but when are we venturing into more conceptual content? The like’s of Heroes, Vampire Diaries, Fringe, Lie To Me, Supernatural, House, 24, V etc. Obviously not a direct copy like we do with reality shows, but we could have a show like “Tokoloshi Diaries” or something (No Joke : | ).

South African Filmmakers make movies about vampires when we’ve got the unknown possibilities of a Tokoloshi to pursue. Americans have been chopping and changing the vampire story for decades and have perfected it…  We cannot and shouldn't try to beat them at their own game. It’s time we do the same with our own mystical creatures.

Not just tokoloshis though, any unique, out of the box idea will do. Series that will make us want to download the programs like we do with foreign content. It’s time we take the next step, we’ve been on the current one for too long. So who’s brave enough? I’ve got a story called “Dreamers” if you’re interested… Hit Me up.
