HYPE clarifies the Don Juan/Morale Payment Saga - The FULL Story

Minutes after posting the story titled, "HYPE Screws Over Artists - Morale and Don Juan Not Paid For Track Features", Simone Harris (Editor of HYPE) gives me a call to set the story straight. Morale, Sean Page and Don Juan DID get paid by HYPE. After Vuzu had aired the story a couple of months ago, HYPE set up meetings with the rappers and sorted out the confusion. Since I seemed a little biased, here's HYPE's side of the story from Simone:

Morale/Sean Pages – firstly they submitted a group track and one of the members were paid the full amount as per the contracts they signed with us regarding royalties. We have proof of payment that money was deposited – unfortunately the splits to the other group members were not paid (by the bank account holder who had no knowledge of the transaction). Subsequently according to the now defunct Glitz Gang crew, it has been sorted out. Regarding all the tracks that Morale has done for HYPE (including the ‘Ayamaah’ track on the Dec 2010 issue) he has been paid for all of them – of which you can verify with him. I’ve CC’ed him and Sean Pages on this email.

Don Juan – myself and my Editor-in-chief had a private meeting with Don Juan to discuss the statements he made the show. He subsequently apologized because there was a series of miscommunication between the various composers of individual tracks he’d done, as well as they CD sponsor and Panorama Publications. He agreed that he is very expressive and should have gotten the right information before going on air. The matter is resolved and monies have and are being paid to Don Juan.

Simone also pointed out that they DO NOT profit from the Hype CD, and since their sponsor hadn't renewed the sponsorship they will make the CD available ONLY on the HYPE mag website. Currently they are paying all the costs with regards to the CDs.

From my side, I have no beef with HYPE and was not trying to discredit them in any way. I agree that I should've gotten the full story first but disagree that my article was one sided. I took it from a medium who revealed both sides of the story and paraphrased it for the blog. Now it's clear to me that HYPE DID NOT screw anyone over and Don Juan was just confused as to what had taken place and reacted impulsively. Don has no beef with HYPE, nor does Morale or Sean Page. It's all good, everybody can go back to the booth and record.
