In South Africa a celeb is someone who simply appears on TV without it being on the NEWS or DTV. Radio is also a big source of many of our current celebs and is a big avenue for people breaking into local entertainment. But some people just do not cut it. In the US, celebs eho aren't really celebs get put on what they call the D-list.
On TV:
ACE from Generations: To prove it I tried finding his photo on the net. Nada, nothing. In this picture where they feature Generations' cast Mr. Mashaba's "right hand man" is not on his right or his left. I've also never read anything published about Ace in the news or seen him being invited to YO TV or something.
The guy who works for Barker on Isidingo, forgive I've forgotten his stage name but he's been playing the same position for years now. The Isidingo crew never thought of upgrading his story and he hasn't thought of changing careers or moving like Generations' Dingaan did. Trying to find his picture on the Facebook group of Isidingo and no luck. You can see him if you peak really close to the middle right of the picture.
On Radio:
Radio does and can create stars. Looking at peole like Fresh, Mo Flava, Glen Lewis and many more whose careers were crafted by radio. At the same time theres individuals working for big radio stations that haven't crossed into being celebs. There's alot but I'll mention one from each big station.
Nutty Nys, from Yfm to Metro. But still no certification that he did anything for the entertainment industry. Sure he got some news and a few songs out, but do people even know what he looks like or even care when they see him? Now he's just a good DJ, but who can put him in the category of celeb? Not me. Adil is even worse but let's not get into that. Is Nutty still on Metro though?
Y-FM's DJ Tholi B: Who the F*** is this? DJ Tholi or something on the Y-FM show weekdays from 6 - 9pm. The nice thing about Y-fm is that it's a platform for many upcoming DJ's to begin their career, DJ Tholi started in 2007 and I still have never heard his voice as a loyal Y listener during the time. Mr. Tholi might be young in the game but sometimes your look gives it away that you will not be in the public eye. And at age 27 he's only got maybe 3 more years to attempt to make an impression. Nothing personal but those are my thoughts. I'll listen to his show tonight to see if I'll change my mind.
5 fm's Mabale Moloi: Someone I'm really disappointed in is Mabale from Gareth's breakfast show. She reads the traffic and does all sorts of things for the breakfast show but hasn't made any major moves after the fact. I mean Poppy just used to be a news reader, but now also has her own show and making other major moves using 5 as a platform. She's in the public eye, everyone knows her but hasn't done enough to fall into the category of celeb. I would still marry hurrr though, she's hot.
Who else do you think should make the list?
