L-O-V-E
A friend of mine recently proclaimed that love is when you want to give your all to that person but at the same time you want to take everything from them. My obvious reaction was “nyikka you gay”. My reaction then was a half ass attempt at being “hard” and just plain cocky as I usually do to things I would rather not discuss or consider. But the statement stayed on my curious mind and the mist gradually cleared. LOVE IS WHEN YOU WANT TO TAKE ALL THAT PERSON HAS TO OFFER BUT AT THE SAME TIME GIVE HER EVERYTHING.
That’s deep on so many levels as I started thinking about how many people are truly in love and who isn’t. It got me thinking about myself and if I’ve ever truly being in love and if this love was reciprocated. Got me thinking about the fact that love has probably existed from the dawn of mankind but somehow it still remains as one of mankind’s biggest mystery. Mankind has firmly landed on the moon many times but is still on shaky ground when it comes to the one thing that makes us all truly human.
In Original Sin; a movie starring Antonio Bonderas and Angelina Jolie; the male lead (Bonderas) is a successful businessman who is scammed by the Jolie (female lead) who marries him and takes all his money and disappears. Infuriated, Bonderas drops everything in search of Jolie. This is where the twist comes in. He doesn’t chase her because he wants his money back or for revenge. He needs to find her because he loves her and would rather die than to live without her. To cut a long story short. Boy wins girl but at the expense his entire life. Friends, family and country all left behind for a professional con artist. That’s completely insane. Or is it?
I don’t know about you but I found this concept of love infuriating but so intriguing at the same time. Ever since this movie I haven’t been able to stop flirting with the idea. The idea that love; true and pure love; should be removed from anything material but should be that which it is. That thing you feel deep down inside when you are with that that person. Like a crystal meth addiction. To be completely removed from reality with your only job being to seek the ultimate high. Imagine the ultimate high. Imagine a feeling so powerful it’s all you need to go on? A high so intense you steal from your family and friends and use them to chase that one thing you can never get enough off. A high so blissful it’s all you live for? All this from one person!!! Imagine one person becoming your entire world. That one person who you want to give your all to and take their all! Imagine the feeling…
But that’s just me. I’m an extremist at heart but outside I’m just a coward like the rest of you. We are all too caught up in the rat race where material things matter too much for true love ever to exist. We have been programmed from an early age to find a “bold and the beautiful” kind of love. A love of convenience. Someone to help you pay the bond and luxury German cars. Someone your mother will like. Someone … “appropriate.”
